You’ve made the jump to purchase an outdoor TV, but now you’re beginning to realize all the dangerous elements your TV is facing. Sunlight, dirt, humidity, rain, bugs…and probably more that you haven’t even thought of. Don’t let this scare you away from getting the outdoor TV of your dreams!

If you’re still in the research stage, you need to know that outdoor TVs are different from indoor ones. Be sure to find one specifically made for the outdoors, as these TVs are built to withstand rain and longer use cycles.

#1: Choose the Right Location

You can extend the life of your TV by simply placing it in the right location. Hang or place it somewhere that is protected from the weather and not in direct sunlight; this will also reduce screen glare. Be sure to mount your TV high enough to see from multiple angles, and have plenty of seating in the area.

Summers bring problems to outdoor TVs. Heat can cause deterioration of the screen, the TV casing, and the mount and cables. If you’re not careful about placement and protection, your TV will not last long and may become a safety hazard.

In addition to having the TV out of direct sunlight, it also needs to be placed at least six feet away from any direct heat sources (such as firepits, grills, lamps, etc.).

Both extreme heat and extreme cold are damaging to outdoor TVs. Depending on the severity of the climate you live in, you may need to invest in a small mountable heater or fan to moderate the temperature of your outdoor TV.

#2: Choose an Outdoor Mount and Cables

You shouldn’t use an indoor TV outside, and the same goes for the mount and cables. Indoor mounts are not as strong as outdoor ones and are not made to handle more extreme temperatures than are faced indoors. Be sure to purchase a mount and cables that are rated for outdoor use and have UV protection; this will further protect the life of your TV.

#3: Choose the Right Outdoor TV Cover

Outdoor TVs have three cover options: full, half, and flip-top. Which one you use depends on the mount style of your TV and the level of protection you desire.
